Ups and Downs of a Futon Mattress....

This is a subject I seem to always be talking about....futon mattresses for everyday sleeping. Well over the last year or so I've really noticed an increase in the number of people buying a futon to sleep on everynight, you can see from our previous posts that we have discussed this point before! Just to keep you up to date I would say that our most popular everyday sleepers are the Traditional 8-layer futon and the Pocket Futoflex.

As a 'rough guide' choose the Traditional 8-layer if you want that 'firm but supportive' feel that a lambswool / woolfelt traditional futon provides, where you create what I call your 'people-shaped pit' to give great support all over your body. If, however, you would prefer a softer, but still supportive, sleep than the Pocket FutoFlex features a central layer of micro-pocket springs enclosed in layers of lambswool / woolfelt giving a feel that is halfway between a futon and a conventional spring mattress; great if you're new to futon sleeping!

Well, here we are in mid-September which can only mean one thing.......the 'season' for buying online is only just around the corner.

With the best will in the world we all know that come November and December the amount of us shopping online will, once again, reach record levels as consumers take advantage of the competetive nature of internet retailing. Of course this can, and will, lead to the 'usual' issues with parcel companies making successful deliveries to your home. We must take our hats off to the guys and girls who drive vans for the City Link / TNT brigade of delivery people, even at this time of year the driver who calls at our shop has around 100 to 130 drops to make each day, just think that through.......

Just sat here pondering the Cavendish 3 seat futon here in our showroom.....

We must have imported thousands of these Cavendish futon frames over the years and it continues to be a popular best seller today. I think its the simple style that people like, it's not too imposing in the room, ideal really as a comfortable sofa offering a double bed for when the occasion arises.

I can't praise this product enough really, the timber is nicely finished, the instructions are good and they seem to be a well put together, robust product.

If you're a fan and like the new Danger Days material then get along as it was top stuff, a true quality performance. Two of our three kids had never been to a live gig before but loved it. Watch out for the support act, The Blackout, certainly a lively bunch of entertaining lads from Wales, but you might want to censor their tunes!!!

OK, thats the 'thank you's' over for 2010, now we have to look to 2011 and the challanging retail environment unfolding before us.
I'm sure everyone is aware of the increase in VAT to 20% to assist the recovery of the economy (hopefully). We also face challenges from increasing raw material costs on items such as cotton, transport cost rises, and transport availability, and the scarcity of commodities as the domestic markets in China and India continue to grow. Having said all this we are determined to address these challenges and continue to keep our focus on offering good quality futon products backed up by a caring customer service. This will, of course, mean prices have to rise to reflect increased production and distribution costs, but maybe now is the time to re-focus the way we make our purchases and look at buying quality items for the long term and not so much 'cheap and cheerful' short term fashion fixes?

Well, here we are on January 1st 2011....wow. I felt I must take the time to say a big 'THANK YOU' to everyone who has been a Futon Shop customer, worked with us or supported us during 2010.
A special mention must go to everyone who waited patiently whilst their pre-Christmas deliveries got stuck in the snow and the resulting 'parcel pile-ups' that happened with the various parcel carriers, leading to major delivery delays, so, once again, 'Thank You', we really did appreciate your understanding.
I should also thank certain staff members at a couple of City Link depots who, despite having many thousands of parcels piling up, took the time to assist us in locating certain items when they could easily just have ignored my e-mails and phone calls. Good to see that good service is still alive and kicking.

RBS £3.6b loss and The Futon Shop.

Here we are at our financial year end for the 2009 / 2010 year and, following the challenging times we have all had of late, I'm pleased to say that, on initial inspection, it looks like we're on the up! Interesting discussions have been had around our breakfast table following the reported £3.6b loss by RBS. We reckon that means they lost £190 per second over the year.....I don't think I could burn the money that quickly. This matter has been interesting for us as, 18 months ago, RBS would not advance us around £3k to finance less than 40% of the purchase price for our new van (thankfully Lloyds TSB, our bankers, helped out!), and yet this year, I can confidently say, we have financially out-performed the once mighty RBS, despite them receiving a massive bail-out from the public purse! It certainly gives you something to think about. Whilst I have a great deal of sympathy for the employees of RBS, you cannot help but feel that somewhere at the top of the tree someone needs 'showing the door' as quickly as possible! Anyway, life goes on at the Futon Shop, we are looking forward to expanding our activities over the coming year and maintaing the most important factor for us; happy customers.

Futons and Disappearing World Resources.

As our new retail year begins we are trying to think ahead and plan what is likely to be the most popular type of futon furniture for the coming year. We expect all types of hardwood bases from Malaysia to be popular, but there is a problem. As the world economies pick up and the Chinese in particular, the demand for this type of wood is growing and the futon bases will become scarcer and more expensive in Europe. We are currently searching for further supplies of good quality pine futon frames and hope that these will be able to run in addition to the rubberwood futons. As there is already supply diificulties for some items, we would encourage customers not to take this type of product for granted, even put a little bit of thought and appreciation into the complex logistics involved in getting these futons to Europe.

About 2 years ago there was an interesting TV program showing how containers from the far east are offloaded and reloaded and moved around by computer in Singapore. If Singapore hadn’t made this costly and imaginative investment many of the products on the high st wouldn’t as cheap and available as they are. Unfortunately the container miracle is also showing signs of stress, at this moment in time many container ships have been mothballed due to the world recession, the sailing survivors are outdated, oil burning and inefficent, and there aren’t enough sailings to accomadate European demand. Maybe enough bad news (don’t shoot the messanger, as they say) but the moral of this post is to expect big changes soon in our wholesale and retail habits and even to our way of life.

Traditional Futon Mattresses.

Here at the Futon Shop we have recently been asked, severel times, for traditional futon mattresses. That is, futon mattresses filled with a simple combination of cotton to the top and bottom of the mattress and a filling of woolfelt inbetween; i.e. no polyester or foam. Many customers have commented that they have slept on this type of futon mattress for years and have been having trouble sourcing a replacement, as most futon mattresses now feature polyester or foam as a 'core'. Well, the polyester / foam 'cores' were developed to give more 'rebound' to the futon mattress, particularly when used on a futon frame for sitting as the 'cores' helped to keep the futon mattress upright on the frame, i.e. it prevented the futon mattress from 'sagging' on the frame, a welcome addition I'm sure you'll agree. Anyway when the mattress is being used purely on a bed frame then we agree that a traditional mix of cotton and woolfelt provides a 'firm but supportive' feel for those customers seeking a traditional style futon mattress, and we have therefore decided to offer this product on our website at http://www.futons247.co.uk/ just follow the link below to the product page.

Futons and Yurt Holidays

Over the last couple of years, here at The Futon Shop, we have supplied futon sofabeds to a couple of 'Yurt' campsites. What, you may be asking, are Yurts? Well I pinched this explanation from the website of one of the lovely people we supplied:

Yurts originate from Mongolia and are traditionally lived in by nomadic tribes. They are strong, aesthetically beautiful constructions that feel both spacious and harmonious to be in. The structure consists of a hand-crafted frame which is steam bent to create the curved form of the roof, and shaped into a trellis for the walls. The frame is covered with a strong canvas and there is a clear circular portal in the middle of the roof, two windows, a wooden floor and door.

We have stayed in the Yurts at www.cornishyurts.co.uk down on the Lizard peninsula and must say that they make a great relaxing way to spend a break with the family. We also supplied futons to www.annwnvalley.co.uk which looks like a beautiful place in Wales, which we've yet to visit. At last we've sourced a range of products, manufactured in timbers, which are actually eco-friendly. Bamboo, in case you aren't aware, absorbs large quantities of CO2, generating some 35% more Oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees, and, of course, can be harvested annually without the need for replanting. Combine this with low soil erosion due to its widespread root system and its lovely warm appearence and we think you'll be pleased with the results. Wow, what a week.......

Yeah, here we are on Friday night, and we are all pooped! Over the last week we (The Futon Shop, that is!) have moved to larger premises at 26 Mary Seacole Road, (literally) just round the corner from our old unit. This involved much huffing and puffing as we lugged all our stock, desks, computers, packaging stuff and, of course, teabags from unit 29 to unit 26. Still we are now fully settled into our new place.

The objective of the move is to give us more space to improve our volume and variety of stock of futons, futon mattresses and sofabeds, ensuring that we can offer rapid delivery on a big selection of products to keep our customers smiling!

Anyone who has never visited us here at Mary Seacole Road may be interested to know that we are located at the old Royal Naval Hospital, here in Plymouth, in a modern unit within the old hospital grounds. The units were constructed to provide facilities for local businesses, so it's a great environment of small to medium local based companies and individuals all working in a local community. The old hospital grounds also contain the original hospital buildings which are a combination of commercial and residential use, many are great pieces of local Naval architecture.

Anyway, enough rabbiting on, as I said it's Friday night, so time to grab a beer and relax.........aaaaahhhhhh....

I have a similar metal base which has been in constant use for 15 years.The sad model in the picture is an example of a later edition, save money at all costs,dumbed down version, which in the long run and even the short run is a total waste of time and money. (see my previous blog comment about buying inferior futons,decision based on price alone.Remember, ask quiestions before you buy, shop with a specialst futon company and try toavoid the large chain companys and a certain large grocery co, who are good for food, but not futons. Futons & The Credit Crunch.

These comments were added to one of my postings by Howard at www.futons-direct.co.uk, a pal of ours here at the Futon Shop. I thought the comments were worthy of thier own posting so here goes.......
I'm also a futon retailer and have been shocked at the fall of the value of the pound. I have decided despite the temptation, that it isn't worth cutting the quality of the products we sell. I would hope that the buying public thinks likewise and resist buying the junk that is beginning to appear on the internet. One way to look at it, is that if you buy a decent product you will still have it long after the credit crunch is over,but if you buy an unsuitable, thin futon it might need replacing as soon as a month after purchase.

Small Stores Find Ways to Drum Up Traffic

The owner of a futon store outside San Francisco started running comedy shows.
Small businesses are always searching for ways to differentiate themselves. But with fewer people out buying, some of the businesses are doing whatever they think will draw in customers.
“This is a buyer’s strike,” said Eric G. Flamholtz, a professor emeritus of management at the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles. “People are holding back and not spending any money. So you have to give them a reason to come.”
Holding special events also can be far less expensive than regular advertising. And in a slowing economy, advertising and marketing budgets typically get trimmed. A recent National Small Business Association survey of its members found that 49 percent planned to start new advertising or marketing this year, down from 54 percent in 2007.

“They’re trying to market with little or no extra money,” said Molly Brogan, the association’s vice president of public affairs. “People are doing more on the Internet, any free thing they can.”
Nor are the special events just for young businesses. Even well-established businesses, like Mary’s Futons in San Rafael, Calif., have been feeling the pinch. Fewer people are buying new futons, and more futons are being brought in for repairs. Mary Hughes, the owner, said she thought a comedy show would be the perfect thing to do because “everyone loves comedy and I wanted to meet women.” A theatrical producer was less than convinced.

“ ‘Lady, are you crazy?’ ” Lisa Geduldig, the producer of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy in San Francisco remembers telling Ms. Hughes. “ ‘I don’t do little futon stores; I do professional venues.’ ”
But after Ms. Hughes cornered her and begged her to do one show, she finally agreed. The first, “An Evening of Lie-Down Comedy,” was held in March and did so well, they added a second. When that one sold out, they added another. That, too, sold out. Proceeds from the tickets go back to the comedians and Ms. Geduldig. If more than 100 people attend, Ms. Hughes gets a small percentage of the ticket sales.

“I get the publicity and that’s worth more than the money,” Ms. Hughes said, though in a later interview she said she was taking over management of the shows.
One recent Sunday night, a hundred people milled around the futon store, nibbling on cake and catching up on gossip. A window display had been turned into a stage, 30 futons were turned to face it and salespeople were doing sound checks. Raffle tickets for a water fountain and beanbag chair were being sold at the door and a line of people snaked away from a sales counter doing service as a concession stand.

Ms. Geduldig threaded through the crowd to the stage, clambered on top and welcomed everyone to the show. “This is a futon shop,” she said. “Feel free to fall asleep.”
Everyone laughed. The show had begun.

Global Price Rises in Raw Materials

Well, it looks like the 'good times' that we, the general public, have enjoyed are coming to an end! We've all had the benefit of inexpensive products being imported from abroad, particularly China and other parts of Asia, over the last few years, this is even relevant in the futon market.
But I'm sure you're all aware of the situation regarding the availability of raw materials now that increased demand is coming from China and India to create their new and improving infrastructures. This is causing continuous rises in the costs for the raw materials needed for constructing futon frames and even futon mattresses.
Although this will see prices rise in the market for futon products we are committed to maintaining the quality of our products; our philosophy continues to be that we will offer futons designed to offer a combination of comfort and value for many years to come. So be assured that the products you buy from The Futon Blog members will not have had 'thier cloth cut' to meet a price point!

Futons by Mail Order??

We are often getting asked about sending futons mail order; how well they travel and if they are easy to assemble. Thinking about the following points may help you out.......

Quoted Assembly times - does the website you are looking at quote assemble times for their products? We reckon that an average hardwood framed product will take around 1 to 2 hours depending on its complexity, and an average pine framed futon can be assembled in 15 to 60 mins depending on it's state of 'flat-pack'.
How does the supplier package its products? - check if the site you are buying from packs its futon mattresses in TWO strong polythene bags, if it's just one then there is a higher risk of damage. Also check for 'double-wall' card being used on the frame boxes.
Check how the supplier delivers to you - most web sites send out products using parcel carriers such as NightFreight or City Link. Parcel carriers will not give a delivery time so please ensure that you arrange a date with your supplier when someone is present at home. It's also worth checking to see if your futon is being dispatched by the company you are buying it from (the website) or if they are dispatching via a factory. If it's travelling direct from the company you are buying it from they may have better tracking information regarding your delivery.
Check your goods on arrival - It's difficult to open every box and bag and check in detail as the delivery company will not want to wait whilst you do this, but just give the boxes a quick look over and mark clearly on the delivery drivers paperwork if there is any obvious damage, then inform your supplier as soon as possible. It's also a good idea to check out your suppliers terms and conditions to ensure that they handle customer services in a responsible way.

Futons as an everyday bed?

One of the most common questions I get asked is; "Can I use a futon as a bed everyday?". Well, I guess the answer needs some explaining........
As is so often the case this depends on the type of futon that you are intending to purchase, in particular what combination of base and futon mattress you are looking at.
Firstly....the futon mattress. If you are intending to use your futon as a bed and a sofa then you need to get a combination of comfort for sitting / sleeping, flexibility for folding into a seat and rigidity to ensure the futon mattress holds itself up when in a seat position. With this in mind I would always look for a futon mattress with a good quality 'core', such as foam or rebound polyester. The core should then be surrounded by layers of woolfelt and cotton. Generally an 8-layer futon mattress, weighing upwards of 20kg would make a good purchase whilst providing a firm, but supportive, sleep. These types of futon mattresses are available from all the independant shops who are Futon Blog members, as well as other outlets on the web.
If you don't need to fold your futon mattress, as it will remain flat on a bed frame, then you could also look at traditional 8-layer cotton / felt futons and the new 'FutoLatex' which contains a mix of cotton and 'cotton-rich' felt around a core of Natural Latex. These type of futon mattresses provide a slightly softer and supportive sleep, making perfect futon mattresses for an everyday bed. Generally these type of futons are only available from specialist stores.
Secondly...consider the type of base you require. In my experience the best bases for a permenant bed, if you are intending to leave your futon in a 'bed' position, are good quality pine bases, such as the Auckland or Osumi. They are simple, robust and will stand the test of time very well, we frequently replace futon mattresses for people who have had their bases for upwards of 10 years! If you want to move your futon from a bed to a sofa then go for a 3-seater style base, they are easy to convert. One or two retailers even stock 3 seater bases that use a 'sprung' beech-slat system for the seating / sleeping platform, providing extra comfort for regular use.

Pine 'A' Frame Futons

There are many different types of Pine futon frames on the market. Here at 'The Futon Blog' our message is.......check the quality!!
A pine futon frame should be strong and designed to last many years, most of our members would look for quality aspects in their frames such as the dimensions of the timber used. Slats should be around 7.5cm+ wide and 1.5cm+ thick and made from a good quality pine such as redwood pines. The underails (this is the part that supports the frame) should be of a similar dimension or look for thicker underails if the base is for everyday use as a bed.
The other factor to consider is how the futon base sits when open as a bed. Many 'A' frames are designed with small front 'feet' in order to provide a comfortable sitting angle when the frame is in a seat position, however when opened as a bed this means that one end of the frame will be slightly raised, not really a problem for visiting guests, but worth considering if it's your main bed. The serious futon user should check out bases featuring integral feet on all the underails (such as Futon World's Acer or Osumi). This ensures that when the base is open in a bed position it forms a slightly raised, level, sleeping area, perfect for everyday bed use.
