The Monk Futon Bed Roll has been around for decades. It is a staple piece, traditional and classic, perfect for an authentic, firm feel.

Our Monk Futons are available in three sizes: single, double and king. Each bedroll is handmade in our studio in Plymouth, UK - from sewing the mattresses covers, to tufting them, each is made with love and care. The Monk Roll is manufactured using a top and bottom layer of pure lambswool, with two layers of cotton-felt in between. We then button them through using felt mattress tufts, giving a thickness of around 8 cm. We also offer an upgrade to include the addition of a mini pocket sprung cage, creating the Pocket Monk. This provides a softer, supportive feel through individually pocketed, 3 cm springs — ideal for more regular use, with around 10 cm total thickness.

The ever-popular Monk Futons have been around for decades, often copied, but never quite to the same as the original. They are very practical, designed to be easily rolled up and secured with the provided velcro straps. This makes it easy to carry around or store.

Where To Use A Monk Futon -

A Monk Futon Bed Roll is excellent as a stopover bedroll for campers, yurts or similar accommodations. Perfect for solo travellers, who want to throw a bedroll into their van for extra comfort. Consider using the Monk Futon for stay-cations, back garden campouts or as soft extra seating for your family movie night.

In comparison, use your Monk Futon as a more permanent sleeping space by pairing it with our Folding Tatami Floor Mat.

Overall, the Monk Futon is adaptable to any situation where you might require additional sleeping space or a quick sleeping solution. Pick from our various fabrics to guarantee your Monk futon is perfect for you. So get yourself comfy, have a seat to meditate or relax on, have a snooze and, once you’re done with it, simply roll it up until next time!

Well, its not often we can write anything about the sunshine in the UK but May and June have been glorious and I'm sure many people, like us, have been heading outdoors to eat, chat and spend time with friends and family.

We've taken this opportunity to set up a cosy seating area originally for a 21st Birthday party but it has since 'stayed put' in the garden for us all to enjoy.

I wouldn't normally recommend using futon mattresses outside as they tend to be quite absorbent with damp and moisture but with the present sunshine and providing you are not too precious over them getting marked they do make amazingly comfortable outdoor loungers / seating....have a nose at these pics...

Futon Mattresses at Futons247 in London and the UK
One of the questions we regularly get asked by our customers is "do you have a traditional futon bed roll that can be used everyday?"

Well, our popular Monk Futon has been used in this way by some customers over the last 10 years or so but now we've also developed our Nomad Futon Bed Roll, a traditional style roll up futon mattress with a firm feel. The Nomad is based around a central core of Cocoloc, this is a natural filling consisting of coconut fibres that are given structure and elasticity by way of a natural latex (from rubberwood trees) spray to bond them together, this provides a firm but flexible and well ventilated basis for the bed roll.

We then offer a choice of surrounding fillings, two different grades of pure wools combined with either traditional futon felt for a firm feel or a warm and softer feel of fine wool, blended with a small amount of polyester to bond the wool fibres together.

You can use the Nomad unrolled directly on to your floor and then simply roll it up during the day and secure with the two Velcro fasten straps that come with it.

The Nomad is available in a standard double bed size of 137 cm / 4ft6ins by 190 cm / 6ft3ins in a choice of three cotton drill fabrics, all traditionally tufted through
with felt mattress tufts.

You can find full details of the Nomad by visiting our website following the link below.

We were recently lucky enough to visit a lovely fully refurbished cottage down in Cornwall as it's owners chose a futon sofa bed for the guest room and our popular Osaka Low Beds with pocket sprung futon mattresses for the bedrooms in the attic, all made down here in the South West of England.

The Osaka beds are just perfect for a loft location as their low height ensures they fit neatly into the sloping ceilings of the converted attic and, naturally, they arrive nicely flat-packed ensuring that there are no issues with access to the rooms. Our customers chose our Pocket FutoFlex futon mattresses for these beds which provide good support with a medium firmness through the fillings of lambswool, woolfelt and a mini pocket spring unit in the middle of the futon, great comfort for them and their guests.

If you want to know more about the flexibility of futon beds for rooms where space is at a premium follow the link to our Futon Beds section on our website.

Here at the Futon Shop we love to see these little gems when we are out and about delivering.........
The futon base pictured here is a Boston, manufactured in rubberwood, that we sold to our customer back in 1997 / 98, almost 20 years ago!

Back in those days the quality of rubberwood frames was exceptional (sadly not so today!) with each component part being a solid cut of timber, not a fingerjoint in sight! It's a testament to the quality of materials, construction and the care our customer has taken of this futon that, after all this time, it is still alive and kicking in their living room, all we were doing was replacing the futon mattress.

I guess this is a good example of why it pays to spend a little more to move onwards and upwards from the cheap 'catalogue' type futons and go for something from a specialist store....like us of course!!

Hopefully we'll be back in 2037 delivering a new mattress to these lovely people.......

A large part of our business here at Futon World is the replacement of customers old futons with a nice comfy new futon mattress and we are happy to offer a great selection which, we hope, covers most aspects of our customers requirements.
Often customers are looking for a futon to replace the worn out one on their sofa bed frame, this can be a 'tri-fold' futon mattress, designed to fit neatly on single size or two seater wood and metal framed sofa beds or a 'bi-fold' futon mattress, designed to fit on the three seat, or 'bench' style, futon sofa bed bases, again wood or metal.
In addition to replacement sofa bed futon mattresses we offer a range that are specifically aimed at everyday bed use, such as our Traditional 8 Layer Futon Mattress which, as the name suggests, uses a tried and tested lambswool and woolfelt filling in a traditional way to create a firm but supportive futon feel. We also have everyday futon mattresses using Natural Latex, Coir Matting and Pocket Spring filling selections, as choosing a futon mattress can be a complex business we would recommend that you contact us through our website for a chat to discuss your requirements, just follow the link below:

we've noticed over time that our blog postings on the suitability of a futon mattress as an everyday use bed are the most frequently read postings, this seems to be inline with the increase in customers purchasing a futon mattress for that exact use.

I guess people often tend to think of the futon as being a simple guest bed for the spare room or a traditional, Japanese style, roll up bed mattress which, of course, they can be, but additionally there are many different types of futon mattress for all uses.

It is the case that mattress comfort can be a matter of personal taste and we often find that one customers definition of comfort is another customers dis-comfort and for that reason we would always suggest that, unless you know your specific requirements in a futon mattress, you should take a few minutes to have a chat with us here at the Futon Shop. We use a variety of filling types for our futon mattresses including traditional woolfelts, lambs wool layers, 'bouncy' polyesters, tough and firm Cocoloc (coir matting), natural latex and even mini pocket spring cages all of which can be combined into the mattress in a way to suit the requirements of our customers and we are always happy to discuss the options with you.

If you have a spare five minutes why not follow the link to read about our Traditional 8 Layer Futon Mattress or our full range of Futon Mattress Products and, the subject of increased discussion with our customers, the availability of mattresses that are free from fire retardant chemicals, the Cottonsafe Chemical Free Futon Mattress Choice. Whatever your futon mattress requirements are we have many years of experience in helping our customers find the correct futon for their purpose so please feel free to contact us any time for assistance.
One of the commonest requests we get from customers is if we can make futon mattresses to specific and, often, extra large sizes for them. I'm pleased to say that in most cases we are able to accommodate this and help our customers to get the futon mattress to suit their needs.

It is the case though that custom sized futon mattresses need to be entirely prepared by hand as our normal production runs are 'jigged up' for standard UK sizes so the extra use of materials and specifically time will incur increased costs but naturally we try to keep these to a minimum as we always enjoy the challenge of creating a lovely new futon mattress for our customers.

The images in this posting show a 'Super King' sized futon that we recently made for a returning customer, it's one of our Traditional 8 Layer futons for everyday bed use and measured in at 6ft wide by 6ft6ins long. If you would like to discuss your requirements for extra large futons please feel free to contact us through our website, just follow the link below:

One of the most common questions we get asked is if we offer a 'traditional' style futon mattress. Generally this question is being posed by people who are used to sleeping on a futon mattress and have been doing so for many years.

Generally these people are sleeping on well worn and compressed futons that are filled with, mainly, cotton, wool or most commonly woolfelt, the 'greyish' filling you'll see in most types of traditional futon mattress. This type of futon mattress will generally be providing their owners with a firm but supportive sleep and it's this type of futon 'feel' that we offer with our Traditional 8-Layer futon mattress.

Our traditional 8-layer futon features a top and bottom layer of pure lambswool and, quite simply, 6 layers of woolfelt inbetween. When new and fresh out of the bag this type of futon may feel a little 'squishy' but the design and type of the fillings ensures that, with use, the futon mattress will compress down and firm up. You often find that the compression initially takes place in the area you are sleeping in creating a 'people shaped' dent which, over time, evens up across the futon mattress surface.

The traditional futon mattress can be used on wood slatted bed frames, tatami mats or directly onto a wood or carpeted floor and remains as one of our most popular choices for everyday sleeping. Please feel free to visit our website to contact us for further information and advice.

Futon Mattress Choice at Futon World
I guess if you've found this blog entry then the subject of safe, comfortable sleeping is important to you? Well, here at Futons247 we have been watching the popularity of our CottonSafe natural, chemical free, bed mattresses growing each month.

Our CottonSafe futon bed mattresses pass the UK fire regulations by making use of naturally fire retardant materials, a fabric weave of organic cotton with wool quilted onto a natural lambswool layer meaning no need for any of the standard bedding industry chemical back coating treatment.

Due to its hygroscopic nature the wool element of the fabric increases the ability for it to breath allowing good ventilation. This keeps the cover fiber warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The increased ventilation also reduces the growth of bacteria naturally keeping your mattress hygenic.
The anti-static and dust free properties of this combination of natural materials also help increase its hypoallergenic properties allowing for a natural night’s sleep.
If, like us, you are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of what we are surrounding ourselves with in our homes then have a look at CottonSafe products on our website.
Our much loved, much traveled comfy Monk Futon bed rolls have gone and got themselves into the spring of Spring! We can now offer an upgrade on this ever popular product to incorporate a 'mini' spring cage in the middle of the existing layers of lambswool and woolfelt providing a softer sleeping surface.

Traditionally our Monk Futon is used for various sleeping arrangements such as guests and relatives staying over, camper vans and even everyday sleeping for those customers seeking an authentic Oriental style bed roll, for full details link to our website below:
