Most Popular Bed Frames
One of our most simple frames, yet one of our most popular, the Senza Bed combines classic style with a touch of contemporary.
Available in both natural and black satin finish, the Senza comes in both a double or king size width. The timber frame is manufactured in FSC Certified (managed forest) Scandinavian redwood pine from Europe and features a simple style base with strong flat timber pine slats for even, firm support.
A similar popular choice is our Japan Bed. Like the Senza, it is also made with sustainably managed redwood pine and comes in both black satin and natural finish. However, this low-level bed can also bed used in conjunction with two of our Tatami Mats for a more authentic oriental feel.
These mats are traditional with a compressed rice straw filling and an Igusa, soft rush, woven covering giving a very firm feel to the sleeping area.
New Bed Frames -
With this summer season, comes two new bed frames: The Osumi and Osaka Futon Beds.
Both of these beds have a low-level design and are made from 100% European Redwood Pine with a natural, untreated finish. They feature slatted bases allowing for good ventilation, as well as a central support bar and four sturdy legs to create extra stability and durability.
The low-level design of both the Osaka and Osumi mean they would be perfect for smaller spaces such as loft rooms and mezzanines without compromising the space.
The Osumi Bed is also available with a pair of optional Cocoloc Tatami Mats. These feature coconut hair and cotton-based natural filling, making them lighter and more flexible without compromising the traditional appearance and fitting neatly within the frame on top of the slatted platform.

This classic ‘A’ frame model is timeless, reminiscent of early style futon frames. It has a simple redwood pine base, which is cut and planed in Cornwall, using north European sourced FSC timber. It's three supporting under rails mean the Scandi futon is strong and durable, suitable for everyday use, and built to last many years. The frame itself is assembled and packed by us, right here in our workshop in Plymouth. Each section is put together in an assembly jig to ensure that they are the same, before being joined with flush fit, easy fix fasteners, for a neat and tidy finish. This is our best ‘A’ frame yet!
On top of the frame sits our own ‘tri-fold,’ lambswool and cotton-felt futon mattress. This mattress curves on the frame into the semi ’S’ shape often associated with this classic style. The ‘tri-fold mattress has a medium feel firmness and is around 12cm thick when new. You can even choose the colour of your mattress from our selection of standard cotton drill fabrics of the lovely weave texture, durable Oslo upgrade fabrics.
The Scandi futon will fit seamlessly into many interior styles, however, if you’re starting with a blank canvas, then considering embracing a boho theme. Pair your Scandi with lots of natural colours and furnishing, such as wood textures, rattan and touchable tufted cushions. Decorate the walls with popular abstract line drawing prints or mirrors and round out the design with plants and life for the perfect Scandi room.

The Monk Futon Bed Roll has been around for decades. It is a staple piece, traditional and classic, perfect for an authentic, firm feel.
Our Monk Futons are available in three sizes: single, double and king. Each bedroll is handmade in our studio in Plymouth, UK - from sewing the mattresses covers, to tufting them, each is made with love and care. The Monk Roll is manufactured using a top and bottom layer of pure lambswool, with two layers of cotton-felt in between. We then button them through using felt mattress tufts, giving a thickness of around 8 cm. We also offer an upgrade to include the addition of a mini pocket sprung cage, creating the Pocket Monk. This provides a softer, supportive feel through individually pocketed, 3 cm springs — ideal for more regular use, with around 10 cm total thickness.

Glamping? I know you're thinking what has that got to do with Futon Beds? Well, over the last few years we've supplied our Futon Beds and Futon Sofa Beds into some great camping environments. As is so often the case this depends on the type of futon that you are intending to purchase, in particular what combination of base and futon mattress you are looking at.
Firstly....the futon mattress. If you are intending to use your futon as a bed and a sofa then you need to get a combination of comfort for sitting / sleeping, flexibility for folding into a seat and rigidity to ensure the futon mattress holds itself up when in a seat position. With this in mind I would always look for a futon mattress with a good quality 'core', such as foam or rebound polyester. The core should then be surrounded by layers of woolfelt and cotton. Generally an 8-layer futon mattress, weighing upwards of 20kg would make a good purchase whilst providing a firm, but supportive, sleep. These types of futon mattresses are available from all the independant shops who are Futon Blog members, as well as other outlets on the web.
If you don't need to fold your futon mattress, as it will remain flat on a bed frame, then you could also look at traditional 8-layer cotton / felt futons and the new 'FutoLatex' which contains a mix of cotton and 'cotton-rich' felt around a core of Natural Latex. These type of futon mattresses provide a slightly softer and supportive sleep, making perfect futon mattresses for an everyday bed. Generally these type of futons are only available from specialist stores.
Secondly...consider the type of base you require. In my experience the best bases for a permenant bed, if you are intending to leave your futon in a 'bed' position, are good quality pine bases, such as the Auckland or Osumi. They are simple, robust and will stand the test of time very well, we frequently replace futon mattresses for people who have had their bases for upwards of 10 years! If you want to move your futon from a bed to a sofa then go for a 3-seater style base, they are easy to convert. One or two retailers even stock 3 seater bases that use a 'sprung' beech-slat system for the seating / sleeping platform, providing extra comfort for regular use.

Natural Latex is farmed from Rubber Trees (Havea Brasilliensis). The liquid latex is converted into foam latex by introducing air and heat creating a foam structure ventilated by airholes. Latex is naturally supportive and performs well in regaining its form and shape, it is also hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, dust mite resistant and breathable, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.
