Here at The Futon Shop, we're specialists in futon mattresses, sofa beds and bed frames. Whilst we stock a large range of space-saving sofas and chairs, sometimes you need a more permanent sleeping solution. That's where our excellent range of beds comes in!

From the Elan to the Kanso, our low-level futon beds are made of strong redwood pine, making them durable and long-lasting. Many of them come in size and colour variations, allowing you to choose the bed that works best for you.

Read on below to learn about our most popular and our newest beds, or click here to view our full range.

Most Popular Bed Frames

One of our most simple frames, yet one of our most popular, the Senza Bed combines classic style with a touch of contemporary.

Available in both natural and black satin finish, the Senza comes in both a double or king size width. The timber frame is manufactured in FSC Certified (managed forest) Scandinavian redwood pine from Europe and features a simple style base with strong flat timber pine slats for even, firm support.

A similar popular choice is our Japan Bed. Like the Senza, it is also made with sustainably managed redwood pine and comes in both black satin and natural finish. However, this low-level bed can also bed used in conjunction with two of our Tatami Mats for a more authentic oriental feel.

These mats are traditional with a compressed rice straw filling and an Igusa, soft rush, woven covering giving a very firm feel to the sleeping area.

New Bed Frames -

With this summer season, comes two new bed frames: The Osumi and Osaka Futon Beds.

Both of these beds have a low-level design and are made from 100% European Redwood Pine with a natural, untreated finish. They feature slatted bases allowing for good ventilation, as well as a central support bar and four sturdy legs to create extra stability and durability.

The low-level design of both the Osaka and Osumi mean they would be perfect for smaller spaces such as loft rooms and mezzanines without compromising the space.

The Osumi Bed is also available with a pair of optional Cocoloc Tatami Mats. These feature coconut hair and cotton-based natural filling, making them lighter and more flexible without compromising the traditional appearance and fitting neatly within the frame on top of the slatted platform.

All of our beds are available as frames only or paired with one of our Devon-made mattresses. Learn more about our mattress range on our website or view the rest of our bed frames

Shopping local is on the rise, with everyone keen to know exactly where, and by who, their products are made. We're big advocates of locally sourced products, with many of our items coming from here in the UK. However, we also have an increasing number of products made right here in our studio in Devon.

Bed Rolls -

Our popular, often copied but never beaten, bedrolls are all made by hand by our team. Our Monk Futon, Monk-in-a-bag and Napper Futon are all built from two layers of UK sourced pure lambswool and two layers of cotton felt. They are then covered in fabric that is also cut and sewn here within our building. Options are also available to add a layer of mini pocket springs for a gentler feel. The mattress is then tufted through with felt mattress tufts just for you! To view how our bedrolls are constructed, watch the video below.

All three of our bedrolls come in various colour options and each is a different size, allowing you to find the perfect mattress for you. Their roll-up style makes them easy to store, perfect for temporary sleeping arrangements. The smaller Napper Futon or Monk-in-a-Bag are also great 'grab and go' mattresses, convenient for campervans or glamping.

Scandi Sofa Bed -

Our Scandi Sofa Bed is the newest addition to our 'Made in Devon' selection. This classic A-frame model features a redwood pine base (from managed forests), which is cut and planed in Cornwall before arriving for assembly at our workshop here in Plymouth. We then put together the frame in an assembly jog, ensuring that each piece is joined correctly using flush fit, easy fix fasteners to keep it looking neat and tidy. For the Scandi, we opted for quality and durability, therefore this model features three supporting under-rails for maximum strength as a bed or sofa. The frame is accompanied by one of our 'Tri-Fold' futons, which is made in the same manner as our bedrolls, but with an added extra cotton felt layer to  maximise comfort for your guests. To view how the Scandi is made, please watch the video above.

All in all, the Scandi is a great choice if you are looking for a locally made, strong futon for regular use, that will keep its place in your home for many years. If the Scandi is for you, then see below for some fun styling options, or go bold with one of our Scandi Limited Editions.

Futon Mattresses -

Whilst not all made in our workshop, every one of our futon mattresses are also handmade down here in Devon. Our traditional mattresses features 8 layers of comfort, with pure lambswool on the top and bottom and layers of bonded woolfelt in the middle. This produces a firm, but supportive, futon mattress. As well as this classic style, we offer pocket sprung mattresses for extra comfort or Cottonsafe mattresses for a chemical-free alternative. Each mattress is tailor made for you, to your chosen size and upholstered in your chosen fabric. Our selection of Devon made mattresses also includes replacement futons for sofas and sofa beds, such as out Bi-Fold or Tri-Fold Mattresses or Standard Double Futon Mattress.

The Monk Futon Bed Roll has been around for decades. It is a staple piece, traditional and classic, perfect for an authentic, firm feel.

Our Monk Futons are available in three sizes: single, double and king. Each bedroll is handmade in our studio in Plymouth, UK - from sewing the mattresses covers, to tufting them, each is made with love and care. The Monk Roll is manufactured using a top and bottom layer of pure lambswool, with two layers of cotton-felt in between. We then button them through using felt mattress tufts, giving a thickness of around 8 cm. We also offer an upgrade to include the addition of a mini pocket sprung cage, creating the Pocket Monk. This provides a softer, supportive feel through individually pocketed, 3 cm springs — ideal for more regular use, with around 10 cm total thickness.

The ever-popular Monk Futons have been around for decades, often copied, but never quite to the same as the original. They are very practical, designed to be easily rolled up and secured with the provided velcro straps. This makes it easy to carry around or store.

Where To Use A Monk Futon -

A Monk Futon Bed Roll is excellent as a stopover bedroll for campers, yurts or similar accommodations. Perfect for solo travellers, who want to throw a bedroll into their van for extra comfort. Consider using the Monk Futon for stay-cations, back garden campouts or as soft extra seating for your family movie night.

In comparison, use your Monk Futon as a more permanent sleeping space by pairing it with our Folding Tatami Floor Mat.

Overall, the Monk Futon is adaptable to any situation where you might require additional sleeping space or a quick sleeping solution. Pick from our various fabrics to guarantee your Monk futon is perfect for you. So get yourself comfy, have a seat to meditate or relax on, have a snooze and, once you’re done with it, simply roll it up until next time!

A large part of our business here at Futon World is the replacement of customers old futons with a nice comfy new futon mattress and we are happy to offer a great selection which, we hope, covers most aspects of our customers requirements.
Often customers are looking for a futon to replace the worn out one on their sofa bed frame, this can be a 'tri-fold' futon mattress, designed to fit neatly on single size or two seater wood and metal framed sofa beds or a 'bi-fold' futon mattress, designed to fit on the three seat, or 'bench' style, futon sofa bed bases, again wood or metal.
In addition to replacement sofa bed futon mattresses we offer a range that are specifically aimed at everyday bed use, such as our Traditional 8 Layer Futon Mattress which, as the name suggests, uses a tried and tested lambswool and woolfelt filling in a traditional way to create a firm but supportive futon feel. We also have everyday futon mattresses using Natural Latex, Coir Matting and Pocket Spring filling selections, as choosing a futon mattress can be a complex business we would recommend that you contact us through our website for a chat to discuss your requirements, just follow the link below:

One of the commonest requests we get from customers is if we can make futon mattresses to specific and, often, extra large sizes for them. I'm pleased to say that in most cases we are able to accommodate this and help our customers to get the futon mattress to suit their needs.

It is the case though that custom sized futon mattresses need to be entirely prepared by hand as our normal production runs are 'jigged up' for standard UK sizes so the extra use of materials and specifically time will incur increased costs but naturally we try to keep these to a minimum as we always enjoy the challenge of creating a lovely new futon mattress for our customers.

The images in this posting show a 'Super King' sized futon that we recently made for a returning customer, it's one of our Traditional 8 Layer futons for everyday bed use and measured in at 6ft wide by 6ft6ins long. If you would like to discuss your requirements for extra large futons please feel free to contact us through our website, just follow the link below:

One of the most common questions we get asked is if we offer a 'traditional' style futon mattress. Generally this question is being posed by people who are used to sleeping on a futon mattress and have been doing so for many years.

Generally these people are sleeping on well worn and compressed futons that are filled with, mainly, cotton, wool or most commonly woolfelt, the 'greyish' filling you'll see in most types of traditional futon mattress. This type of futon mattress will generally be providing their owners with a firm but supportive sleep and it's this type of futon 'feel' that we offer with our Traditional 8-Layer futon mattress.

Our traditional 8-layer futon features a top and bottom layer of pure lambswool and, quite simply, 6 layers of woolfelt inbetween. When new and fresh out of the bag this type of futon may feel a little 'squishy' but the design and type of the fillings ensures that, with use, the futon mattress will compress down and firm up. You often find that the compression initially takes place in the area you are sleeping in creating a 'people shaped' dent which, over time, evens up across the futon mattress surface.

The traditional futon mattress can be used on wood slatted bed frames, tatami mats or directly onto a wood or carpeted floor and remains as one of our most popular choices for everyday sleeping. Please feel free to visit our website to contact us for further information and advice.

Of course we can delivery our futons throughout the Uk and Ireland, so whatever your requirements are please feel free to get in touch with us at Futon World and we will do our best to help.

We've been selling these great little mattress protectors for years now and, having used one at home, must say they are an excellent addition to use with your futon mattress.
The Morpheus Mattress Protector is manufactured with pure cotton fabrics and filled with a quilted cotton fiber inner, i.e. everything is cotton! The benefit of this is that you can wash the mattress protector at a high temperature thus killing off all the nasty bugs that like to make their home where you sleep which is useful if you have any issue with bed bugs or house dust mites. We also like the mattress protector because it gives you a natural sleeping surface free of man made additives, all in all a good choice to help with healthy sleeping. The Morpheus is available in a choice of sizes from our website, follow the link below:

One of the most common questions we get asked concerns how a futon mattress feels to use as an everyday bed......
Well all our futon mattresses are manufactured down here in Devon using a variety of filling types such as woolfelt, lambswool, coir and, sometimes, polyester or foam cores. The typical behaviour of a new futon mattress tends to give a fairly soft, 'squidgy', feel when the futon is new, fresh out of the bag, but as you start to use the futon mattress the fillings will compress increasing the firmness. After a couple of weeks you will notice the difference as your futon gains the firm but supportive feel you are used to experiencing from a futon mattress.
We would also recommend that regular turning of your futon would be good practice, each time we change our bedding at home we rotate our futon end to end and upside down, this helps even out the wear on the futon. You may also find that as the compression takes effect your futon mattress develops a 'person shaped' pit in it which is common place and will even out with use.
Of course, if you would like to discuss any particular areas of futon mattress use please feel free to contact us through our website...

What exactly goes into your futon mattress, do you really know? There are many different was of filling a futon from the comfort of lambswools to the flexibility of springs to the plain useless of crumb foam.
If you take the time to watch this posting from our friends at Cambridge Futons you can get some 'inside knowledge' on what you should be looking for inside your futon mattresses.
Of course, whilst the video provides some useful information, your own requirements will vary depending on weather you're futon is to be used as a sofa bed or futon bed and your own personal comfort requirements, so if you've any questions please feel free to contact us here at The Futon Shop.
