Following our recent meeting here at The Futon Shop we've decided to offer our futon sofa beds and futon mattress products all with FREE weekday delivery across the UK mainland, this means all of England, Wales and the Scottish mainland. Sadly we will still have to charge for 'offshore' UK deliveries such as Scottish Isles, Isle of Man and Ireland as these types of delivery attract a premium rate from parcel carriers due to extra costs incurred.

We're sure you will agree that this is great news and will ensure that out futons remain competitively priced and great value for money. If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to contact us through the blog or visit our website by clicking the link below:

At this time of year the topic of getting a futon before Christmas is being discussed in our shop every day! The good news is that 'Yes' we still have production space and stock to guarantee delivering our lovely futons and sofa beds to you in time for your visiting festive guests so visit our website today at www.futons247.co.uk or feel free to contact us through our blog or Google+.
Whilst checking out eBay's guide to buying a sofa bed or futon I couldn't help but draw a comparison to an old record I used to have 'PXR5' by Hawkwind!
Older readers may recall this particular album had a sleeve design which showed a incorrectly wired 3-pin plug which had to have a warning sticker placed over it for fear of someone following the wiring suggestion and, naturally, giving themselves a nasty shock in the process!! Anyway, after reading the eBay buying guide I think it's just possible that it too should have an appropriate warning sticker over the top of it; the wording is bad and the information contained within is, to say the least, sketchy and not really correct or informative.
So the suggestion here is that if you're looking for a futon or sofa bed then ensure you take advice from specialist stores like ourselves who will be happy to guide you with your choice ensuring you purchase the correct product for your needs.

You can check out the eBay guide at http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Sofa-Bed-Buying-Guide-/10000000177320575/g.html or simply read the articles in our blog!

What?? it can't be that time of year already...can it? Well not exactly but every year we try to encourage customers who are looking for a futon or sofa bed for Christmas use to buy early. Why is this?....
Well the closer we get to Christmas the busier the delivery companies get and, in our experience, the more errors they make which causes hassle for our customers and us - I'm sure we could all live without that!
In addition, and just as importantly, please be aware that stock levels of futon bases in particular can decrease rapidly as we get into mid / late November so if there is a certain item you are after then take the plunge and buy it sooner rather than later.

I know you're thinking...'what has this got to do with futons?'...well nothing really but we loved these bags so much that we had to get them in stock.

Fans of retro computing and gaming will love the 8-bit graphic style which enables you to create your own designs (I'm thinking Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Galaxians etc..) using coloured silicone pixels fixed onto a silicone panel on the bag front and you can change your design time and again!
On top of this the bags are really well made and feature padded compartments for your laptop / kindle etc plus all your daily stuff.
Check out the YouTube clip to see for yourself...

Yes, I know, lots of futon mattresses are comfy so not really a fair title for this blog post! However the tricky area has always been the futon mattress for two seat style futon sofa beds. Whether you have a hardwood two seat, metal two seat or traditional pine 'A' frame sofa bed the futon mattress has always been a bit of a balancing act between producing a comfy mattress and one that is practical to fold into the 'semi-S' shape when being used as a sofa.
Well, our friends at Cambridge Futons are now making the new Flexi-Pocket Futon Mattress which makes use of a micro-pocket spring cage in the center of the mattress which improves both sitting and sleeping comfort along with increased durability. For the 'untrained eye' this futon looks 'normal' and, thankfully, still provides the usual benefits of support as the spring cage is surrounded by layers of woolfelt and pure lambswool.
So, if you're on the lookout for a futon mattress for regular use then we think the new Flexi-Pocket is worth a place near the top of your list. Find it by following the link below;

In today's furniture stores there are so many futons and sofa beds to choose from it can easily cause confusion and lead to the good old pine futon being overlooked as 'cheap' or 'uncomfortable' which, as you may be aware, is not always the case.

The internet is crowded with the cheap sofa beds imported from the farthest corners of the world, many are just crude metal frames covered in foam and cheap fabrics that look great when they are new but are best 'binned' after 6 months or so!

Pine frame futon sofa beds have been around for a few decades now in the UK and in the present market the quality can vary in accordance with the type, grade and thickness of the pine timber used. We would always suggest going for a frame in Redwood Pine as this is tough and durable and, of course, look for the detailing; is the wood smooth and free of sap pockets, how well are the screws and fasteners fitted, is the timber a decent thickness and can parts be replaced in future if needed? All important questions that need to be considered. It really is worth giving good consideration to the pine futon as a well made one will last you forever and will certainly outlast the metal sofa beds we previously mentioned.

Anyone who has been on holiday in France, Belgium or pretty much anywhere in Western Europe may have, at some stage, slept on a Clic-Clac Sofa Bed this style of sofa bed makes a great option if you are looking for something that is robust, easy to use and good enough for everyday use.

Over the years we have placed these Sofa Beds into private homes, letting properties and (gasp!) student lets and they have stood the test of time well. As with everything you buy it pays to spend a bit extra on getting a well made Clic-Clac where each component is renewable, i.e. you can replace the mattress, cover or clic-clac mechanism without having to buy a totally new sofa bed!
The Clic-Clac we supply is fully UK made using a Belgium made mechanism and comes with a choice of mattress thickness depending if you need it for guest or everyday use. Follow the link to our website for full details:

Not really a direct futon discussion but I thought this article was interesting. Google have a monopoly here in the UK which would, perhaps, not be allowed in any other industry. Why not spend 5 mins reading this article from the BBC, is it time to look at the alternatives, after all who needs to know about Tesco's and five entries for Gumtree that are adverts that have expired? Is Google loosing the way?

Over the years I know many people have purchased Sofa Bunk sets and what a great idea they have been, we've sold some different models over the years including the original Jay-Be Sofa Bunk, many of which are still around today, in fact we've just given our old one at home away after 12 years of use and it was still going strong!

Anyway, as I'm sure you will know if you have a sofa bunk the futon mattress on the sofa can need replacing after a few years and, you'll be pleased to know, this is not a problem as, here at The Futon Shop, we have a selection of futon mattress types and sizes to suit Sofa Bunks of all types.

If you follow the link below you can view these on our website. If you are unsure what to look for the please give us a call from the number on our website. Before you call us can I suggest that you open the sofa into the bed position and measure the size of the bed (width and length) and also check if the sofa / bed base uses metal mesh / poles or wood 'arched' (or 'sprung') slats for the support. Once you've done that just give us a call!

One of the most common questions we get asked concerns how a futon mattress feels to use as an everyday bed......
Well all our futon mattresses are manufactured down here in Devon using a variety of filling types such as woolfelt, lambswool, coir and, sometimes, polyester or foam cores. The typical behaviour of a new futon mattress tends to give a fairly soft, 'squidgy', feel when the futon is new, fresh out of the bag, but as you start to use the futon mattress the fillings will compress increasing the firmness. After a couple of weeks you will notice the difference as your futon gains the firm but supportive feel you are used to experiencing from a futon mattress.
We would also recommend that regular turning of your futon would be good practice, each time we change our bedding at home we rotate our futon end to end and upside down, this helps even out the wear on the futon. You may also find that as the compression takes effect your futon mattress develops a 'person shaped' pit in it which is common place and will even out with use.
Of course, if you would like to discuss any particular areas of futon mattress use please feel free to contact us through our website...

I'm sure if you live anywhere near SE1 in London you'll be familiar with our image of the Elephant & Castle shopping center. You'll also be aware how difficult it can be getting a nice quality futon sofa bed or mattress delivered to your door.
Here at the Futon Shop we always try to help out with tricky deliveries into London and, depending on your requirements, we can send your purchase to your home or work address and, in certain cases, request that the parcel carriers call you 30 mins before delivery to allow you to drop back from work to receive your delivery. We were recently in SE1 ourselves completing a delivery for a customer who needed several items and, in that circumstance, we could arrange the delivery for a 1 hour timeslot so, whatever your delivery requirements in London, please feel free to call us to discuss the options.

ooohhh we're so excited as our new Carnaby range of fabrics is now available on our selection of futons and sofa beds. These brightly coloured fabrics are UK designed and printed on tough cotton, half-panama weave, fabrics and are contrasted with a plain border and reverse.
The Carnaby range is a little more expensive then the standard plain cotton drill but, in our opinion, well worth the extra as the futons look great. The picture shows our Cavendish 2 Seat Futon in the Poppy Red fabric which is our favorite, follow the link below for more info......

What exactly goes into your futon mattress, do you really know? There are many different was of filling a futon from the comfort of lambswools to the flexibility of springs to the plain useless of crumb foam.
If you take the time to watch this posting from our friends at Cambridge Futons you can get some 'inside knowledge' on what you should be looking for inside your futon mattresses.
Of course, whilst the video provides some useful information, your own requirements will vary depending on weather you're futon is to be used as a sofa bed or futon bed and your own personal comfort requirements, so if you've any questions please feel free to contact us here at The Futon Shop.

I know we are really only interested in futons and the futon industry in general but, here at The Futon Shop, we like to offer our customers a range of products suitable for visiting guests and one of our favorites is the Royal Pocket Sprung folding guest bed manufactured by British company Jay-Be up in Yorkshire.

We've been retailing Jay-Be folding guest beds for many years now and have always found the quality to be excellent with strong frames, comfy 'sprung-slat' support on the sleeping platform and, as the name suggests, a pocket sprung mattress to ensure comfort for your guests.
All Jay-Be beds come with a five year frame guarantee which shows confidence in this UK manufactured product. View the video to see how it works...

Sleep finding ways to get more

Why a bedroom should not be just another family room. Sleep finding ways to get more or enough of it is a broad subject and here's the first in a series of posts that may help.

Most people enjoy a good night’s sleep. There is little doubt “a good kip” is a necessity for putting the anxieties of the day behind you and setting up the body for the events of the following day.

An essential element in getting “proper rest” is the state of your bedroom. The reason society has developed a separate place to sleep is that it’s a unique environment; try not to have too much clutter.

Your bedroom should have curtains or blinds that shut out light completely so morning sun doesn’t wake you too early, something that can easily disturb your sleep particularly in summer months. Good quality curtains help keep noise levels from traffic and disturbances in the street down to a minimum.

Extremes of temperature affect sound sleep so err on the side of coolness if you use central heating. Also, try to find natural bedding, all cotton or silk sheets together with a decent duvet will help peaceful rest. If it’s too warm in your bed, make changes.

When getting ready to sleep a radio is a better option that the stimulating effect of television. If at all possible a computer should be used in a room other than the bedroom. Of all aids to sleep, reading is probably the best.
These days we seem to have every type of filling for a futon mattress, you name it we've got it; woolfelts, cottons, lambswools, foam, springs...the lot!
Despite all the various options providing different levels of comfort and support it seems some of our customers are looking for a pure and simple traditional futon mattress to provide a firm but supportive sleep. To us a traditional futon is usually being used, laid flat, on a bed frame for everyday sleeping, as opposed to a futon mattress used for a futon sofa bed where the mattress is required to fold. If this is the case we would manufacture the futon mattress using, simply, lambswool and woolfelt layers, the lambswool as the top and bottom layer of the futon and six layers of woolfelt inbetween with an option to substitute the woolfelt futon fillings for a cotton rich filling for a softer / springier feel. This type of traditional futon mattress, although starting its life with a medium feel, will compress down in the traditional way to provide a firm but supportive sleep that has become the preference of the experienced futon bed user.
I know whats going on behind closed doors!!! Yes, you're all 'at it'...spring cleaning that is!
This is the time of year when, at last, the sun shines through our windows making us want to smarten up our homes and getting us thinking that the old futon mattress is looking a bit tired!

Of course what's really needed here is a lovely new futon and buying one can be a bit of a nightmare with so many different choices and options available so we've published a new page on our website called Buying A Futon Mattress which will help guide you through the process of making your choice.

Whatever your requirements from a traditional futon mattress for everyday sleeping to a bi fold futon mattress to use on a three seat futon sofa bed we will be happy to offer advice to ensure you make the correct choice. Please feel free to feedback to us what you think of our online help pages.
Just a quickie blog to let you know our lovely new Oak Futons are now in stock. These great quality futon sofa beds are using solid Oak timber for the arms and supporting areas that is free of the finger jointed timber commonly found on budget rubberwood futon sofa beds from certain high street supermarkets and catalogue stores!! The sleeping and sitting platforms are slatted with mature pine timber for strength and good ventilation to support the (Devon made) futon mattress.
The models now available in Oak are the Cavendish Oak 3 Seat Futon the Cavendish Oak 2 Seat Futon the Akino Oak 2 Seat Futon and the Akino Oak 3 Seat Futon and all are in stock for quick delivery.

Glamping? I know you're thinking what has that got to do with Futon Beds? Well, over the last few years we've supplied our Futon Beds and Futon Sofa Beds into some great camping environments. 'Glamping' is the name given to, er, 'posh' camping! This includes Yurts, Bell Tents, Safari Tents and basically any traditional canvass tents which are made lovely and cosy with soft furnishings, often wooden floors and comfy beds or sofabeds.
This lovely glamping site in Snowdonia has used our Osaka Futon Beds in their traditional Bell Tents and, as you can see from the picture, they look great and suit this style of camping perfectly.
For further information on our futon beds follow the links in this posting and, of course, if you fancy a glamping trip in Snowdonia follow the link below:

I'm sure that many of you have noticed the recent invasion of page one of Google organic listings and how the 'big boys' of business have started to take this page over?
Google Search used to be the one place that you could seek out alternative and different products and information from independent sources and retailers without having to conform to the ideas and profit driven motives of the multi-national chains but this now seems to be fading away as these companies have stepped up their manipulation of Google's search criteria. Do we really need to be told of the existence of Tesco and Argos, isn't the reason we're using Google in the first place to avoid them?
Well, if you want to support smaller, independent, businesses the do what I do...skip to page two! Better still, let Google know, tell them you preferred the old results, do something before the internet becomes just a virtual out-of-town retail park!!
Today's 'ultra quick' posting is just to remind you all out there in 'Google Browser' land that we have a great selection of futon sofa beds and mattresses with rapid delivery through the UK and Ireland and especially for you lovely people in London who really seem to appreciate the benefits of great quality futon furniture.

We've blogged about Shepherds Huts in the past but had to add this posting today as we're really impressed with the look of these huts which are, naturally, fully UK manufactured so a big 'thumbs up' to the people at Riverside for that!
Follow the link to their website we know you'll love what you see.

Riverside Shepherd Huts

With Spring just around the corner (fingers crossed!) this is the start of the time of year when we'll be spending more time in sunnier parts of the house such as a conservatory or sun room. If you're looking to add a bit of privacy why not have a look at our range of Oriental room divider screens which make a great addition to many rooms in the house.
I know from conversations with customers that these screens are great for dividing off area's of a room such as separating a desk / work area, a dressing area or kitchen space as well as making a great privacy screen for, as previously mentioned, a conservatory or a large window area.
We also seem to send many of these Oriental Screens to businesses as well, such as beauty and nail bars, restaurants and health clubs to name just a few.
We also now have a range of Decorative room divider screens which actually not only make a great room divider but are lovely decorative items in themselves. Anyway, if you have any questions please feel free to contact us through our website or via the blog.

Two of our most popular futon designs, the Oslo Futon and the Nordic Futon are on offer at the moment on our website, www.futons247.co.uk, with prices reduced until the end of April. These excellent metal framed futon sofabeds are well constructed, sturdy and, importantly, very simple to convert from a sofa to a bed and back again.
Both these models make a popular choice for teenagers / students bedrooms as the ease of conversion means there is actually a chance that they might make their bed!
Of course these are just two examples of our comprehensive range of Futon Sofa Beds available with delivery throughout mainland UK, of course if you have any questions please feel free to contact us through our blog or website.
Regards,
The Futon Shop.

Over the last few weeks some street art has been springing up around Union Street, where we are based in Plymouth. I love this type of art and think that it really helps to brighten up and add interest to 'eyesores'such as long term empty shops and pubs etc.

Union Street in Plymouth has had its fair share of economic depravation over the last couple of decades but seems to be showing signs of improvement which would be great as there always seems to be a strong and varied community down here.
Anyway follow the link to our Google+ page to see all the photo's.

Chatting to one of our customers the other day I realised that they were putting one of our low level futon beds into their recently completed loft conversion. Now this is interesting as I've seen a lot of loft / attic conversions being done around Plymouth recently.

Naturally ceiling height is often an issue in converted roof spaces and a low level bed will help take care of this by not making you sleep uncomfortably close to the roof and, additionally a bed frame with a low height also gives a perspective of taking up less space generally in your room.
Of course the other question we get asked about beds is 'will it fit up the stairs' and, as our futon low beds come in an easy to assemble flat-pack form getting them up (or down) a narrow or 'spiral' type staircase is no problem.
Our beds can be purchased with a selection of futon mattresses or you can use them with other mattress types such as sprung mattresses or foam based mattresses, please feel free to contact us through our website or ask a question on the blog here if there is anything else you would like to know.
Just a quick blog to let you know the excellent Monk Roll Up Futon Bed Mattress is now available at Futons247.
These great little futons are perfect for visiting guests and make an easy to carry 'stop over' bed if you're visiting friends or heading off in your camper or tent. Check them out for full details by following the link below:

Just a quickie! We have the excellent Strato Sofa Bed available in a choice of two fabrics on offer at only £199.00 while stocks last. It's great value for money if you're looking for a spare room sofa bed, just follow the link to Futons247
I guess if your reading this your maybe looking for a new Futon Mattress to replace your existing one? Well buying a futon mattress can be confusing so here at The Futon Shop we've got a good selection and we're quite happy to chat to you on the phone to discuss your requirements.
Basically the first step is to decide what type of futon mattress you need and I would suggest dividing this into three main areas:

1) Futon Mattresses for bed use - if your intention is to use your futon mattress for everyday sleeping use on a bed frame, tatami matting or on the floor then you need to choose a futon mattress designed specifically for this purpose such as our Traditional 8 Layer Futon Mattress for a firm but supportive feel or our Pocket FutoFlex Futon Mattress for a softer supportive feel.

2) Futon Mattresses for 3 seat futon sofa beds - often referred to as a Bi-Fold Futon Mattress these type of futon mattresses are designed to simply fold along the length to allow them to fit three seat style (or 'bench' style) futon frames in wood or metal. The rule here is to consider how frequently you use the futon, if it's regular use I'd recommend making a choice of a futon mattress with a high density foam core.

3) Futon Mattresses for 2 seat futon sofa beds - such as the traditional pine 'A' frame futons, the classic style we all know and 2 seat style hardwood and metal futon sofa beds. These type of futon mattresses can also be referred to as Tri Fold Futon Mattresses and are designed to be a combination of comfort and flexibility to allow them to fold in the 'semi-S' shape to fit correctly on the futon frame.

Information on all of these futon mattress types can be found at our website or please feel free to call us on 01752 662030.

I know I'm always 'banging on' about the subject of organic and natural futon mattresses but this subject is getting more important as time goes by.
The first big question is what is the difference between organic and natural? Well as I understand it a futon mattress with natural fillings and fabrics would mean that the futon is manufactured using materials that are free from artificial interference, i.e. free from man-made fibers and any chemical additives, this is truly what we should be sleeping on.
For a product to be truly organic the fillings and fibers should have a link from the origins and sources of the animals, plants or ground they were grown on or in! Now this is a tall order and I do wonder if any of the people posting that they have 'organic' futons should, in fact, be using the term 'Natural' instead?
Anyway, I think we should all pay more attention to what kind of mattress we are sleeping on and I'm please to say that here at Futons247 we can offer a couple of Natural Futon Mattresses of varying degrees of firmness and filling choice. Check us out.

We seem to have struck a chord with the narrowboat owners in the city of Bath as we have just delivered another Futon Mattress to a lovely narrowboat on the canal in the city. Futon mattresses are a great option for these type of boats as they can (and we did) be squeezed through a tight doorway. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to discuss options for your boat.

Just a quick Blog post to let you know that we have 10% off our usual competitive prices on replacement futon covers from today until the end of March. We know everyone likes a nice new look for the spring so follow our link below and grab a Futon Cover bargain!

Futon Covers at Futons247
Well, yesterday morning was spent delivering a new futon mattress to these lovely people who have made their home on a boat on the canal near Bath, a really beautiful and peaceful spot.
To help ensure all went smoothly I delivered the Futon Mattress myself, meeting up with the boat at a suitable mooring spot.
Futon mattresses make a great option for canal boats as the flexible nature of the futon makes it easy to fit through tight access spots and along narrow gangways. If we can be of any assistance in offering advice regarding futon mattresses for similar homes please feel free to visit our website at www.futons247.co.uk

If you're thinking of buying a replacement futon mattress then follow the link to the Futon Shop Ltd where we are offering a free upgrade from our standard 8-layer Twin Loft futon Mattress to our Ultimate Foam Futon Mattress, which contains a sturdy reflex foam core - making it suitable for everyday use.

This offer is available until Sunday 17th February, so be quick and follow the link below!

Futon Mattress with free upgrade.
We've blogged before about the desire to expand our range of futon mattresses that use chemical free coverings and natural fillings and are now pleased to say that we've expanded our range to offer a choice of sizes and fillings in futons for everyday bed use and we will also soon have available a chemical free futon for use on three seat style futon sofabeds, keep checking the blog for updates.
The biggest development in this type of natural futon mattress is the use of the totally natural wool and hemp weave fabric for the mattress cover thus taking away the necessity to have FR treatment. This type of fabric is quite expensive pushing the price of the futon mattress up, but, in our opinion, this is a small price to pay to achieve a chemical free sleeping environment. The Natural Futon Mattresses are offered, for bed use, as either the DeLuxe Natural Futon Mattress featuring two central layers of coconut fibre / latex coir or the Traditional Natural Futon Mattress which uses a traditional mix of lambswool and woolfelt. Follow the links to our website for full details.

Natural Futon Mattresses
Here at The Futon Shop we like to try to be the futon company to get your delivery to you on time. The recent snowy weather may have stopped one or two deliveries but on the whole all our customers have received their futon sofabed and futon mattress orders on time so a big Thank You to everyone for their understanding while the snow challenges us all.
We know from our chats on the telephone with you that finding a King Size Futon Mattress can be a difficult job, but we have a variety of futon mattresses available in the standard UK king size of 150cm wide by 200cm long with a choice of futon fillings.
Our best sellers include the Traditional 8 Layer Futon Mattress with its lambswool and woolfelt fillings providing a firm but supportive feel and the Pocket FutoFlex Futon Mattress which uses a pocket spring unit within a lambswool and woolfelt futon mattress to create a supportive, but softer feel, futon mattress.
Over the years we have delivered many of both these futon types and have generally had good positive feedback from our customers.
If you would like any further information please feel free to call us or mail us via our websites or using the text links in the above information.

As we've been kept busy since coming back from our Christmas break we've decided to extend our SALE until Sunday 20th January. Being busy is doing a good job of keeping away the post-holiday blues...so thanks to all our customers for visiting our website.

Are Google driving you crazy? Why does their search system seem to favour the big companies like eBay, Amazon and Argos? More annoyingly the system seems to detect your IP address and then feed you results with a local bias....great in principle but useless in practice as my BT Business Broadband suggests that I'm in Bath so the results reflect that, very frustrating. I think we should all go back to using Yahoo, like years ago, as their results now look like Google's did a year ago, much better!

Try searching for 'Futon' on both Google and Yahoo and see for yourself, see where our results appear for the following
